Nitration Process

Nitration is a surface process. A hard layer with high abrasion resistance is formed on the material surface as a result of the diffusion of nitrogen on the steel surface. Every material has a nitration capability. Nitration increases corrosion resistance and fatigue strength of some steels. On the other hand, it reduces the corrosion resistance of some steels. The nitrogen-saturated white layer on the steel material surface shows ceramic-like properties following nitration. This layer has considerable effect on abrasion resistance of the tool or mold.
