Cementation Process

Cementation (or Carburation), known as a type of “thermochemical process” is one of the oldest surface hardening processes; it is based on saturating the steel material surface having low carbon content with carbon in solid, fluid or gas environment. The material is usually hardened by tempering it with water in oil after cementation process. As a result; the part’s surface is hard and abrasion-resistant, the core side is soft compared to the surface but it is tough; that is, a material resistant to impacts is obtained.
Advantages of this process are;
  • Its carbon potential is adjustable, so it is a controlled process.
  • Shorter process time.
  • Part shape, size or process depth and suchlike factors don’t limit the application area.
  • It is a non-toxic method, it enables continuous operation.
